If you’re like me and you’re always looking for a holiday to celebrate, I’ve got a few reasons for you to don a party hat and maybe throw a little confetti. Today is Star Wars Day, a holiday that I fully intend to completely ignore (unless a coworker bakes Darth Vader cupcakes or something. Then I may be persuaded).

A day that I will be observing, though, is International Firefighters’ Day. Today we honor the firefighters who keep us safe, and who have given their lives serving their communities. IFD is also a day to say thank you to firefighters everywhere. So… THANK YOU!

My brother Kyle is a Firefighter for Lee County’s South Trail Fire Department, and I’ve decided to annoy thank him by posting a few pictures. Leave a comment now to thank the firefighters in your life!

Let’s blame it on the economy. We could call it a return to simpler times, when the little things in life could bring us joy without deflating our wallets. A world before technology. Before Wii and Rock Band and iPods distorted our view of true entertainment. Whatever we blame, Call FM Julio is officially hooked. And for just $1.99 you too can experience endless thrills, chills, and other fun things like… exhilaration.

It’s called a kite. (If you’re under the age of 67 you may need to wikipedia that one.)

Your afternoon guy, Julio, found a kite at a local Walgreens drugstore and has been thrilling himself–and plenty of innocent bystanders–with this $2 piece of plastic and string. Please enjoy a few video clips. The first one is a look at the sort of people who used to enjoy kites. Notice they lived in an era when none of the cool forms of entertainment existed yet. And that they’re the kind of people who randomly burst into song and dance without any warning, which could explain why things like kites get them incredibly excited.

The second video is of Call FM Julio showing us just why kite-flying could be making a comeback… or maybe he’s just showing us why when we see him these days, we should seriously consider running in the opposite direction. (OK, OK, so my laughter in the video might make you think differently. I’m just saying, approach at your own risk.)

Dear Diary,

Today was a super fun day. I saw lots of cute boys and painted my toenails that new shade of Hannah Montana Magenta. I also got to listen to some brand new music from one of my fave bands! sigh… I <3 FM Static. Which is why it’s so cool that I’ll be giving away copies of their brand new album on the radio over the next 2 weeks! Not only that, Diary dearest, but I’ll also be giving away loads of entries for the FM Static grand prize giveaway!!! I haven’t told anybody yet, but the grand prize is going to be a brand new CAMCORDER for one lucky listener to keep a video diary of their lives!!! OMG, this is like totally more exciting than that one time when Johnny’s arm accidentally brushed against mine in biology class and I swore I would never wash my elbow again… The contest kicks off officially next week, and listeners will have chances every day to win entries into the grand prize drawing, along with chances to win the brand new album, Dear Diary.
